Afghan governor kidnapped

ASADABAD: Suspected militants kidnapped governor of the restive Afghan province near the border with Pakistan, a senior local official as saying on Saturday.

He said Khan was kidnapped traveler Qayyumzai, Ghazi Abad district governor, on Friday with his son and two of his bodyguards and Mr. Fadlallah Kunar provincial governor Waahedi.
"When he was on his way to his office from home, and taken from his car by unknown assailants and taken away," said Waahedi. He added that local officials now had "to take steps to secure the release of the governor of the province through the mediation of tribal and negotiate with the Taliban."
Taliban and other often kidnapped police, soldiers and NGO workers in Afghanistan, but relatively rare for them to target prominent local politicians. Taliban insurgents are waging a near 10-year-long insurgency against the government of President Hamid Karzai and Afghan security forces and foreign troops that support the administration.
